Get your tax ID (Steuer-ID)

Your lifetime tax number. It is created automatically after your first Anmeldung and arrives by post in 2–3 weeks. Your employer needs it to pay you correctly.

1. 1Wait for the letter (2–3 weeks after Anmeldung)

   The Bundeszentralamt für Steuern sends your Steuer-ID automatically to your registered address after your first Anmeldung. Nothing to apply for.

2. 2No letter? Request it at the Finanzamt

   If nothing arrives after 4 weeks, request the ID at your local Finanzamt or via the BZSt online form. Give the ID to your employer — without it you are taxed at the highest class.
