Guides to German bureaucracy

Apply for your residence permit

Non-EU citizens apply at Munich's Ausländerbehörde (KVR). Apply before your visa expires — the application itself protects your status (Fiktionsbescheinigung).

  1. 1Check your permit type and gather documents

Find your category (Blue Card, work §18a/b, study, family) on the KVR pages — each lists its own checklist. Typical set: passport, biometric photo, contract, insurance proof, Anmeldung.

  2. 2Apply online at the KVR before your visa expires

Submit via the KVR online application. Applying in time protects your right to stay and work even while you wait for the appointment. Keep the confirmation.
