Convert your driver's license

Non-EU licenses are valid for 6 months after you register. After that you must convert (umschreiben) — depending on your country this may require theory/practical tests.

1. 1Check the rules for your country

   Annex 11 countries (e.g. Japan, South Korea, some US states) convert without tests; others need theory and/or practical exams. Check before your 6 months of validity run out.

2. 2Apply at the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde

   Book an appointment, bring your license with a certified translation (ADAC offers this), passport, biometric photo and Meldebescheinigung. Fee ~€36–45 plus any required tests.
